The Best Waterfalls in Lombok (and How to Reach Them)

A wide jungle waterfall fanning into a clear pool in the hills of Lombok

Mount Rinjani feeds a network of rivers that tumble off Lombok’s slopes as waterfalls, and chasing a few of them is one of the most rewarding ways to spend a day inland. The jungle is cooler than the coast, the swimming is a treat after a walk, and the drives in are scenic. Here are four of the island’s best — what to expect and how to reach each one.

Tiu Kelep

Tiu Kelep, near the village of Senaru in the north, is the showpiece. Water spills over a wide rock face in a broad, misty curtain into a pool you can swim in, and on a sunny day the spray often throws up a rainbow. Reaching it means a forest walk from the Senaru trailhead with uneven paths and a few stream crossings, so expect wet feet. A local guide is usually arranged at the entrance and is worth taking.

Sendang Gile

Sendang Gile shares the same trailhead as Tiu Kelep and is the easier of the pair — a shorter, more straightforward walk down well-made steps. The falls drop in two tiers through the forest and make a natural first stop before continuing on to Tiu Kelep. Most visitors do both together in a single trip, which is the smart way to make the long drive north worthwhile.

Benang Kelambu

In the central foothills near the village of Aik Berik, Benang Kelambu is something different: instead of one big drop, water trickles through hanging vegetation in delicate, curtain-like strands across several tiers, with pools you can stand under. It’s a softer, prettier scene than the big northern falls, reached by a walk through farmland and forest. The greener, fuller look is best after the wetter months.

Benang Stokel

Benang Stokel sits near Benang Kelambu and is the easier sibling — a shorter walk to a pair of more conventional plunge falls. The two are usually visited together, with Benang Stokel often first along the trail. Together they make a good central-Lombok alternative to the longer haul up north.

Practical tips

  • Season matters. Waterfalls are at their most powerful in and just after the wet season (roughly November to March). In the dry months the flow drops but trails are easier and pools are still inviting.
  • Wear proper footwear. Trails are uneven, rocky and often slippery near the water. Sandals with grip or trainers you don’t mind soaking beat flip-flops.
  • Take a local guide. At Senaru especially, a trailhead guide knows the safe paths and current conditions — and conditions can change quickly after rain.
  • Mind the water. Pools can be cold and currents stronger than they look after heavy rain. Swim where it’s calm and don’t go in alone in high flow.
  • Start early. The popular falls fill up midday. An early start means cooler walking, better light and quieter pools.

Why a private driver helps

Lombok’s best waterfalls are spread out and the roads to them are long and winding — the north in particular is a serious drive from the south coast. With a private driver you set off early, travel in an air-conditioned car, and skip the hassle of arranging transport once you’re in remote villages. Your driver can pair two waterfalls in a day, wait at the trailhead while you walk, and know the rest stops along the way. It turns a logistically fiddly outing into a smooth, flexible day out.
