Kuta Lombok

Overview

Kuta Lombok is the easygoing hub of the island’s south coast — and nothing like its busier namesake in Bali. It’s a small town built around surfing, with a string of wide bays, headland viewpoints and white-sand beaches strung along the coast in both directions. The pace is relaxed, the scenery is dramatic, and almost everything worth seeing on the south coast is within a short drive of town.

Things to do

• Watch the surf at Tanjung Aan, a horseshoe bay known for its unusually soft, pepper-grain sand.
• Climb Bukit Merese, the grassy headland beside Tanjung Aan, for sweeping coastal views — especially good near sunset.
• Try a beginner surf lesson in the gentler bays, or watch experienced surfers at the more exposed breaks.
• Browse the morning markets and warungs in town for local Sasak food.

Getting to Kuta

Kuta is our base, and it sits close to Lombok International Airport. The drive from the airport is short — roughly 20 to 30 minutes in normal traffic — which makes Kuta a natural first stop straight off your flight. Once you’re settled here, every south-coast beach and day trip starts right from your door, so most visitors base themselves in Kuta for their stay.

A recommended day

1. Start early at Tanjung Aan before the midday heat.
2. Walk or drive up Bukit Merese for the panorama.
3. Head west to the quieter bays for lunch and a swim.
4. Return toward town and finish at a sunset viewpoint.
