Selong Belanak

South Lombok · ~30–40 min from Kuta · ~20 km

Long crescent of white sand and gentle surf at Selong Belanak bay on the south coast

Overview

Selong Belanak is a long, gentle crescent of white sand west of Kuta, and it’s the south coast’s go-to beach for first-time surfers. The bay’s mellow, rolling waves and soft beach break make it forgiving for beginners, while the wide shoreline and shallow water suit families and anyone who just wants an easy beach day. Local stalls rent boards and offer lessons right on the sand.

Things to do

  • Take a beginner surf lesson on the gentle beach break.
  • Swim and relax on the broad, soft white sand.
  • Rent a board and practise in the rolling waves.
  • Enjoy a simple beachside meal at one of the warungs lining the bay.

How to get there

From Kuta, Selong Belanak is an easy trip — a short, scenic drive west of around 30 to 40 minutes over the coastal hills. We pick you up at your Kuta hotel or villa and take the road in, which offers some lovely viewpoints over the bay as you descend toward the beach.

  1. Arrive mid-morning when conditions are usually friendly for learners.
  2. Take a surf lesson or rent a board.
  3. Break for lunch at a beachfront warung.
  4. Relax on the sand, then catch the coastal viewpoints on the way back.

Why book a private driver

Selong Belanak is close, but it’s tucked over the hills with no direct public transport. A private driver gets you there comfortably in an air-conditioned car, carries boards and beach gear, and can fold the bay into a wider south-coast day. You travel on your own schedule, with a local who knows the best time to catch the gentlest waves.
